Between 6–18 months (depending on breed), dogs go through significant neurological and hormonal changes. The emotional centres of the brain, such as the amygdala, develop more rapidly than the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control, decision-making and behavioural regulation.
This temporary imbalance can lead to increased reactivity, risk-taking, reduced impulse control and inconsistent responses to previously learned cues. At the same time, rising sex hormones influence confidence, social behaviour and environmental sensitivity.
Your dog hasn’t forgotten their training — their brain is under construction.
